Michael McKillop will be remembered as one of the greatest Paralympians of all time having won 10 medals at major championships along with representing Ireland at 3 Paralympic Games winning 4 Paralympic Gold Medals in the process.
Smyth competes in the T37/38 class in the 1500m event and had competed in the 800m before it was removed from the Paralympic programme. The Antrim man made his major event debut at the 2006 World Championships where he claimed the Gold medal in the 800m, the first in his glittering career.
Michael’s most recent triumph came at the 2017 World Championships in London where he clinched the 1500m gold medal. Injury cost Michael the next 2 years of his career until he made his return at the 2019 World Championship in Dubai where a fourth placed finish was enough to secure a slot for Ireland at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
