The 2024 HerSport Awards are set to honour the remarkable achievements of Irish sportswomen and the dedicated volunteers who support them. The event will take place on Saturday, 25th January 2025, at UCD Astra Hall.
This year’s nominees include Orla Comerford for Athlete of the Year, Róisín Ní Riain for Young Athlete of the Year and Ireland Para-Cycling for Team of the Year along with Para powerlifter Casey Fitzgerald who was one of the five athletes chosen to be a part of the inaugural Futures Program who travelled to Paris last year during the Paralympic Games.
Orla Comerford delivered a standout performance in Paris, marking her third appearance at Paralympic Games. She broke the 12-second barrier for the second time in her career to win bronze in the T13 100m final securing her spot on the podium and her first Paralympic medal.
Róisín Ní Ríain had an exceptional showing at the Para Swimming European Championships in Madeira, Portugal, where she claimed an impressive five medals, despite having the most demanding schedule of the team—competing in 11 races over six days. Her performance in Madeira served as a promising preview of her potential, and just four months later, she delivered on that promise by winning two medals at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games. The Limerick swimmer won her first Paralympic medal with a strong second length in her S13 100m backstroke final at the La Défense Arena last summer. She followed this up by storming to third in the SM13 200m individual medley.
Casey Fitzgerald discovered her passion for para powerlifting in late 2021. Looking for a sport that was just for her, Casey sought an activity that could provide both a physical challenge and a mental boost. Para powerlifting gave her a sense of purpose, allowing her to focus on her own growth and well-being. Since then, Casey has embraced the sport, securing two gold medals at the the 2023 World Para Powerlifting Championships in Dubai.
