JAMES BROWN AND DAMIEN SHAW MISS OUT ON MEDAL AT THE VELODROME
ELLEN KEANE TO SWIM IN 100M BUTTERFLY FINAL AT 19:30 TONIGHT

James Brown and Damien Shaw have narrowly missed out on a podium place in the Bronze medal ride off in the paracycling Individual Pursuit B competition at the Velodrome. The pair clocked a time of 4:26.075 to finish outside the medals in fourth place behind the Spanish pair of Clemente Solano and Munoz.

In the Bronze medal ride off the Spaniards set the pace early on, leading the Irish by just .4 of a second. The Irish put on a push approaching the halfway mark, and reversed the lead. Coming into the second last lap the lead reversed again when Spain made a massive push to secure the Bronze medal.

After the race the James Brown commented on the ride-off performance of the Irish duo who have only been together since January .

James Brown commented,

“We will improve with more time together, we are racing against full-time professional bike riders whilst holding down a business and jobs. If we get a chance to spend more time training together on a full-time basis we will no doubt build on these results.”

Enda Smyth took two seconds on his own Irish record in the Men’s Individual C1-2-3 1km race against the clock. Smyth, who broke his elbow two months ago, finished 16th out of the 28 competitors and was ranked 7th of the C3 riders.

Rena McCarron Rooney lost her opening match in the Table Tennis Women’s Singles F1-2 Preliminaries at the ExCel Arena to France’s Isabelle Lafaye Marziou and will tomorrow face Jordan’s Maha Bargouthi at 11.40am.

Eimear Breathnach also lost her opening match in the Table Tennis Women’s Singles F1-2 Preliminaries at the ExCel Arena to Italy’s Pamela Pezzutto and tomorrow will play against France’s Florence Sireau.

Breathnach aired her frustration after today’s performance commenting.

“It was not good enough I’ve played her before and performed much better just very disappointing.”

Philip Quinlan lost his first game in the Table Tennis Men’s Singles M1 Preliminaries at the ExCel Arena to France’s Jean-Francois Ducay and tomorrow will play against Great Britain’s Robert Davies at 12.20

Table Tennis Team Coach Michael Cunningham speaking afterwards said.

“They are all now looking at having to win their matches tomorrow by a score of 3-0 to stand any chance of progressing in the singles that is the difference at the highest level. One bad shot selection can change the course of a match, It just didn’t go our way today.”
