On the opening night of finals at the last World Para Swimming World Series meet in Berlin, Ards teenager Barry McClements swam a new lifetime best of 1:03.94 in the C final of the 100m Butterfly. This swim was good enough to see him placed twenty second overall but notably awarded silver as the second fastest junior in the event.

Paralympic bronze medallist Ellen Keane performed strongly in the B final of the women’S 100m Butterfly touching in a time of 1:11.89 to claim eleventh overall. The Dubliner followed this up less than an hour later with an appearance in the B final of the 100m Breaststroke where her time saw her place 16th overall.

Team mate Nicole Turner also raced in that final but unfortunately picked up an injury during the course of the race that sees her withdrawn from tomorrow’s action. The Laois teenager started the day so brightly having hit a new lifetime best in qualifying for this evening’s final taking a tenth of a second off the time she set in Rio at the Paralympic Games.

Tomorrow morning four of the six Irish swimmers will take to the water in the heats of the 100m Freestyle. All races at this new World Series are being run as multi classification meaning advancement from the heats is determined based on times linked to a points system. Many of the world’s leading swimmers are competing this weekend with over a hundred entered in each event in search of spots in the evening finals.

All athletes results at each World Series edition will be calculated using a standardised points system via an online virtual competition platform. This will ensure that the overall World Series winner will be the best performing athlete over the duration of the series, meaning that every performance counts. The overall winners of the first ever World Series titles will be decided in Berlin.

Bringing together some of the biggest competitions on the global calendar, the World Series will take in five countries across Europe and the Americas between March-July, leading into the 2017 World Championships in Mexico City in October. At the previous editions in Copenhagen and Sheffield the Irish team claimed medals and several personal best performances.
