Para Athletes Shine In Belfast

The Irish Universities Athletics Association held their Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Queen’s University Belfast where the Irish Para Athletes were amongst the very best performers throughout the competition.

Noelle Lenihan had a superb event in the Discus throw as she set a new Maynooth University record of 31:39 to finish in second place overall against an able bodied field!

The tone for an excellent weekend of competition from the para athletes was set by Orla Comerford who powered into the final of the 100m with a time of 12:34 before running a brilliant 12:84 into a stiff headwind to finish on the podium in 3rd place.

Newcomer, David Leavy, was also in terrific form as he ran an excellent 1500m time of 4:27:47 to set a new personal best and set a very encouraging standard with the target of success at the European Championships in Germany next August.

Head of Para Athletics, James Nolan said ‘It has been a really valuable experience this weekend in Belfast. I am delighted to see David Leavy come into one of his first events and perform so well, we have high hopes for David. Orla Comerford was fantastic to finish on the podium in a very strong time and Noelle Lenihan has maintained her world class form. Other like Greta Streimikyte also had very encouraging performances which bode well for the Europeans later this year.’
