Paralympics Ireland can confirm that the contract for Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games Chef De Mission, Denis Toomey, has been cancelled with immediate effect.
The Covid 19 virus has had a significant impact to date globally on every facet of life, including sport. One of the most significant impacts to sport has been the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games until August 2021. As a result of the postponement the decision has been taken to terminate the contract for the Chef De Mission role as it cannot now be fulfilled in 2020.
The postponement of the Games to 2021 required a prompt appraisal of the financial implications for Paralympics Ireland. Termination of the contract for the Chef do Mission was seen as a regrettable but necessary step to mitigate the effects of the postponement on Paralympics Ireland finances and to protect Tokyo funding for 2021.
Paralympics Ireland would like to thank Mr. Toomey for all of his work, professionalism and expertise since his appointment to the role in 2019 and would like to wish Denis well in the future.
