Ireland’s para-triathlon squad returned home with a haul of medals this week after a fantastic weekend of performances at the Starthclyde ITU Para-Triathlon World Event in Scotland.
Dubliner Catherine Walsh became the first Irish athlete to scoop gold at an ITU Para-Triathlon event, when she – alongside pilot Fran Meehan – secured victory in the women’s PT5 event. The win saw Walsh bag more points for qualification, and is now currently ranked 11th.
Elsewhere, Fiona McCormack scooped silver in her event, Tojo Lazzari claimed bronze in the PT3 event, while Aidan McGlynn finished fourth in the men’s PT4 category.
Speaking afterwards, para-triathlon coach Eamonn Tilley was delighted with the results.
“We’ve taken another step forward in the right direction,” he told Triathlon Ireland. “In our first year of development, we’ve seen the numbers of athletes competing in Europe jump from two to six athletes, our medal tally has increased and this is the first time we’ve ever received gold. Also it’s great to see that on one outing we got three medals in three different categories.”
The para-triathlon squad now head for France on June 19th for one of the final events before the Games.
