Five Irish swimmers were in action in the opening heats of this morning’s IPC European Open Swim Championships, with four of these achieving slots in this evening’s finals.

First into the pool was Nicole Turner in the Women’s 200m Individual Medley SM6 heats. The Laois native swam a phenomenal six-second PB time of 3.18.79 to safely book her spot in the final later this evening.

Dubliner Ellen Keane was next to go through to the finals, hitting the pool for the Women’s 100m Backstroke S9, and swam a fantastic Personal Best time of 1.16.74.

Later on, Jonathan McGrath and Ailbhe Kelly competed in the Men’s and Women’s 400m Freestyle S8 respectively. McGrath – who is looking to secure a Rio Qualification Time in this distance – finished the heat in a time of 4.53.50 to book his spot in this evening’s final.

Kelly meanwhile, who had a brilliant first day yesterday which saw her PB in the Women’s 100m Freestyle S8 final, kept up her good form this morning to finish the heat in 5.39.51.

Elsewhere, 14-year-old Barry McClements featured in the Men’s 100m Backstroke S9, where he secured a time of 1.14.40.
