Australia was the destination for the 2000 Paralympic Games as Sydney hosted the first games of the new Millennium.
This was to be a memorable games for the Irish Boccia team thanks to a haul of 3 medals. Gabriel Shelly provided one of the great moments of the games as he claimed Gold in the Mixed Individual event and the duo of John Cronin and Margaret Grant added a Gold medal in the mixed pairs event. Dave Malone and Mairead Berry both delivered in the pool for the second games in a row thanks to a gold for Malone and two silvers and a bronze for Berry. Catherine Walsh also made her mark in the Women’s Pentathlon as she claimed a bronze medal, this began a brilliant Paralympic career for Walsh who went on to star across multiple disciplines.
