17 year old Limerick athlete, Róisín Ní Riain, has delivered a second Bronze medal at the Madeira 2022 World Para Swimming Championships making it three medals for Ireland after Nicole Turner’s win yesterday evening.

Ní Riain, who claimed her first bronze medal on the first day of competition last Sunday, repeated the trick with a superb swim to secure her place on the podium. Indeed it took a Championship record from race winner, Gia Pergolini and an Oceania Record from second place Katja Dedekind to deny Róisín a higher place on the podium.

Róisín entered the race as the youngest athlete in the field and turned after the first 50 metres in fourth place immediately behind the championships record holder and defending champion, Carlotta Gilli. However, with the end within reach it was Ní Riain that was able to dig deeper to pull away from her Italian competitor to win the bronze medal for Ireland.

Speaking about how she realized she had won the bronze medal Róisín said “They said, Ireland have got themselves another bronze medal, so that was lovely!”

Talking about her achievements to date this week she said “Obviously that feels good you know, coming out there on an international stage and being able to perform and being able to medal so yeah, I think I’m making a name for myself.”

Róisín will enjoy a rest day tomorrow before she returns to the competition pool for the final of the 400m Freestyle Final. There will be two Irish athletes in action tomorrow when Barry McClements and Nicole Turner compete in the 400m Freestyle and 50 Freestyle Heats respectively.
