Athens, the spiritual home to the Olympic movement, hosted the 2004 Paralympic Games. Team Ireland continued to punch beyond our weight as our team delivered a four medals, 3 athletics and 1 swimming.
Conal McNamara, Derek Malone and John McCarthy were the medal winners in track and field. McNamara won silver in the men’s 400m and Malone followed suit with his bronze in the 800m. John McCarthy threw brilliantly in the discus to secure his bronze medal on the F32/51 class.
Dave Malone won his last medal at the 2004 games as he claimed silver in the pool in the 100m Backstroke. Malone returned to the Paralympic Games in 2008 to make his fourth appearance at the Paralympic Games.
