Geraldine McTavish has been appointed as the new Disability in Sport Lead for Sport Ireland marking their continued commitment to inclusivity for all in Irish sport. With a proven track record in equity, diversity, and inclusion, McTavish is set to bring transformative change to the landscape of Irish sport.

McTavish has long been an advocate for inclusive practices in sport, dedicating her career to ensuring that participation opportunities are open to all. She spent five years as the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Manager at the GAA, where she led the way on a variety of key issues across the Association. Her work in this role has been instrumental in driving initiatives that have made Gaelic games more accessible to underrepresented groups, including those with disabilities.

In her new role as Disability in Sport Lead, McTavish will focus on fostering greater participation among athletes with disabilities, ensuring accessibility, and advocating for policy changes that promote equality within Irish sport. Her vast experience in managing inclusive programs and working with various sporting organisations will be invaluable in shaping Sport Ireland’s future strategies.

Speaking about the appointment Paralympics Ireland CEO Stephen McNamara said; “We are delighted to see Geraldine appointed to a great team in Sport Ireland.  We have made no secret of our belief that Disability Sport must follow the successful model and template developed by Sport Ireland over the past decade to develop women in sport.  When someone wakes up each day and has one priority area to deliver in, they get things done, and we believe that having a lead in the area of disability sport will transform opportunities for people with a disability in the years ahead.

Geraldine has been a tireless advocate for inclusion in sport, and her leadership has already made a significant impact. Her appointment as Disability in Sport Lead at Sport Ireland is a fantastic step forward for accessibility and equality in Irish sport. We look forward to working closely with her in this vital role.

I would like to thank outgoing Minister Thomas Byrne for his commitment to this role and for helping to bring it forward.”

With her deep commitment to equity and diversity, McTavish is well-positioned to make a significant impact in her new role. As Sport Ireland continues its work towards a more inclusive sporting environment, her leadership will play a pivotal role in shaping policies and initiatives that benefit athletes with disabilities across the country.
