Greta Streimikyte got Team Ireland’s World Para Athletics Championships campaign off to a sensational start today, storming to gold in the T12/13 1500m.
The three-time Paralympian stamped her authority on the race early, moving to the front of the pack and maintaining control before powering clear in the closing stages to cross the line in 4:39.62. The victory marks Streimikyte’s first-ever World Championship medal, a historic moment in her career.
Speaking after the race she said: “To be honest I like taking a race, taking it on so I just took the opportunity”.
She has completed her programme at the World Para Athletics Championships, as this was her sole event.
Lana Sutton made her World Championships debut during this morning’s session placing fourth in her T38 100m heat. Finishing in a time of 13.01, it was enough to book herself a slot in tomorrow evening’s final.
Orla Comerford’s campaign begins this evening with the 100m T13 direct final.
