New York/Stoke Mandeville 1984

The 1984 Paralympic Games were significant for several reasons. The games were hosted on two sides of the Atlantic Ocean as Stoke Mandeville and New York shared the hosting duties. Stoke Mandeville was the spiritual home of the Paralympic Games as the competition that was the forerunner and inspiration to the Paralympic movement and, in 1984, the games returned to that hallowed ground.

Team Ireland enjoyed out most successful ever games in terms of medal success as Irish athletes claimed 67 Paralympic medals. Amongst the medal winners was Ronan Tynan who went on to gain international fame as a singer but as an athlete he showed his versatility by winning three gold and one silver medal in Discus, Shot Put, High Jump and Long Jump.
