Mary first encountered throwing through an induction day with the Irish Wheelchair Association Sport when she was 11. She was selected to join Paralympic Ireland’s High Performance squad in 2019 and made her first international appearance in Grossetto before competing at the 2019 World Championships in Dubai where she finished 7th overall.
Mary won bronze at the 2021 World Para Athletics European Championships with a throw of 7.35. Tokyo was her first Paralympic Games. She finished 7th in the Women’s Shot Put F40 with a best throw of 7.79. In May this yearFitzgerald shattered her personal best with a throw of 8:87m at the Paula Radcliffe Stadium in Loughborough, adding over 1/2meter to her previous personal best.
She has a degree in Occupational Therapy from University College Cork where she was the recipient of a Quercus Scholarship for her academic and sporting achievements.
