The 2024 Irish Horse World Awards, held at the K Club in Straffan, Co. Kildare, brought together the brightest stars of the equestrian world to celebrate their exceptional achievements. From dressage to show jumping, the awards recognized outstanding talent across multiple disciplines, honouring those who have made a significant impact in the sport. Among the celebrated athletes was Paralympian Sarah Slattery, who was awarded Dressage Rider of the Year for her outstanding performances in para dressage, including her debut at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.
In Paris, she made a stunning debut in the Grade V Para Dressage events aboard her 16-year-old mare, Savona. In the Individual Championship Test, Slattery showcased her exceptional skill, scoring 68.410% and finishing in ninth place, which earned her the position of first reserve for the Freestyle final.
After a late withdrawal, she was called up to compete in the Grade V Freestyle final. Despite having limited time to prepare, she delivered a personal best performance, scoring 71.80% and securing seventh place. Her impressive results at the Games marked a significant milestone in her career.
Additionally, Slattery played an integral role in Ireland’s participation in the team event, where she joined teammates Michael Murphy and Kate Kerr-Horan. Together, they finished in tenth place overall, contributing to a strong team performance at the Games.
Sarah is the third para dressage rider to receive the award since its inception in 1997.
