Irish Paracycling stars Ronan Grimes, Katie-George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal have been nominated for the Sportsperson of the Year and the Team of the Year awards respectively.
For Grimes it has been a year to remember as he picked up multiple international medals on the road and on the track.
He was crowned European time trial champion in the men’s C4 category in Austria back in May and followed that up with a bronze medal in the Paracycling Road World Championships C4 time trial in Canada in August.
In the same championships, Grimes won his first World Championships gold medal as he took victory in the C4 road race.
He closed out his season in style on track in October as he won a silver medal in the individual pursuit at the Paracycling Track World Championships in Paris.
The Galway native is in stellar company in a final ten-person shortlist that includes boxer Katie Taylor, Kerry GAA ace David Clifford and Ireland’s first-ever gymnastics world champion Rhys McCleneghan.
Irish Paracycling duo Dunlevy and McCrystal won the Team of the Year award in 2021 after their three-medal haul at the Tokyo Paralympics saw them crowned double Paralympic champions.
It’s been another successful season for the pair as they were back amongst the medals at the Paracycling Road World Championships in August, winning a gold medal as well as silver.
They soloed to victory in the women’s tandem road race, earning their sixth world title, after already claiming a silver medal in the women’s tandem time trial in Baie-Comeau.
The awards set to be handed out on the night include RTÉ Sport Sportsperson of the Year, RTÉ Sport Team of the Year, RTÉ Sport Manager of the Year and RTÉ Sport Young Sportsperson of the Year.
The RTE Sports Awards will be broadcast live on Saturday, December 17th.
