Former Ireland rugby international, Gordon D’Arcy, and Olympian, Jessie Barr, were unveiled today as the first two ambassadors for the 2018 Para Swimming Allianz European Championships.

This August, Ireland will host a major international Para Sporting event for the first ever time as over 500 athletes representing more than 40 countries compete for European gold. Gordon and Jessie will be amongst those that will be coming to the National Aquatic Centre between August 13th-19th to cheer on Team Ireland.

The newly announced #Dublin2018 ambassadors will also play their part in the pool as they will take part in an ambassador 50m Challenge Race. Jessie and Gordon will join 6 more ambassadors, who will be announced in the coming months, that will brave the National Aquatic Centre 50m pool in an event that will offer spectators some extra entertainment in an action packed week.

Speaking about her appointment as an ambassador for the Para Swimming Allianz European Championships, Jessie Barr said ‘This is a fantastic event that I am delighted to get behind. As an athlete, I know that opportunities to represent your country in front of your own supporters are rare and I am delighted that our Para Swimmers will have a chance to do just that.’

Former rugby international Gordon D’Arcy said ‘Our para athletes have been an amazing source of inspiration to our country and they more than deserve the opportunity to represent Ireland in their home pool. I can’t wait to be there and witness come great performances in front of a packed National Aquatic Centre and hopefully a few of those European Medals will be staying in Ireland in the hands of our swimmers.’

Chairperson of the #Dublin2018 Local Organising Committee and CEO of Paralympics Ireland, Miriam Malone said ‘It is wonderful to have sports people of the stature of both Jessie and Gordon getting involved as ambassadors for this great event and I look forward to seeing them, and the other ambassadors, at the championships.  While on this occasion the elite performances will undoubtedly be by swimmers in the official competition, fair play to the ambassadors for agreeing to take part in their own race, in the National Aquatic Centre next August.’

The Para Swimming Allianz European Championships will take place between August 13th and August 19th at the National Aquatic Centre. Further details about the event and how to get involved as a volunteer are available from www.paralympics.ie
