Limerick swimmer Róisín Ní Riain has been named The Irish Times Sport Ireland Sportswoman of the Month award for April 2024.
Ní Riain produced the sporting week of her life last month when she won five medals, including two golds, at the European Para Swimming Championships in Portugal. Her gold medal performances were in the 100m Breaststroke and 100m Backstroke complimented by silver in the 100m Butterfly and 200m Individual Medley and bronze in the 400m Freestyle.
It was an outstanding all-round performance by the Irish team, which won 12 medals in all, but Ní Riain’s form was exceptional, despite having a gruelling schedule that saw her swim in 11 races over seven days.
Ní Riain was 16 and the youngest member of the Irish team that competed at the Tokyo Paralympic Games. Her medal winning form at the Para Swimming world Championships in Manchester last summer and in Portugal sees her heading to her second games in fantastic form.
