Paralympics Ireland has welcomed the decision by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) today to open suspension proceedings against the National Paralympic Committee of Russia (NPC Russia) following the publication of the McLaren Report on Monday, July 18th, alongside additional information that has been received by the IPC from the report’s author.

The IPC Governing Board stated on Friday, July 22nd, that they have ratified the decision to open suspension proceedings against NPC Russia in light of its apparent inability to fulfil its IPC membership responsibilities and obligations.

“This is a hugely important issue for the integrity of sport,” said CEO of Paralympics Ireland, Liam Harbison. “Paralympics Ireland is firmly in support of the International Paralympic Committee and their commitment to clean sport to ensure that all athletes are able to compete on a fair and equal playing field. Irish athletes undergo rigorous anti-doping testing both in and out of competition through Sport Ireland.”

“We also welcome the IPC’s decision to allow NPC Russia to undergo due process and have the opportunity to present their case in accordance with the rights and obligations of members under IPC rule.”

The full statement from IPC can be read here.
