All four Irish swimmers raced on the opening day of the Sheffield edition of the Para Swimming World Series. Rio Paralympians Nicole Turner and Ellen Keane both advanced from morning heats to finals this evening.
The pair raced in the multi-class 100m Breaststroke final with Paralympic bronze medallist Keane placing ninth in 1:25.32, and fourteen year old Turner eleventh in 1:48.61.
Earlier on team mates Patrick Flanagan and Barry McClements featured in the heats of the 100m Freestyle. Unfortunately fifteen year old Mc Clements was disqualified for an infringement at the start. UCD swimmer Flanagan didn’t advance from the heat touching the wall in a time of 1:25.07.
All four Irish swimmers are back in the pool in the morning in various heats (details below). The World Series takes in some of the biggest Para swimming competitions around the world ahead of the 2017 World Para Swimming Championships in Mexico City in September. Sheffield is the third of five events in the series and by far the most competitive to date with over 300 swimmers from 20 countries competing.
All heats and finals will be shown live on www.britishswimming.org
All athlete’s results at each World Series edition will be calculated using a standardised points system via an online virtual competition platform. This will ensure that the overall World Series winner will be the best performing athlete over the duration of the series, meaning that every performance counts.
