Ireland’s Greta Streimikyte got the World Para Athletics European Championships off to the perfect start for Team Ireland as she led the field home in a European Record time to retain the gold medal that she had also won in Berlin in 2018.

Greta Streimikyte was the first Irish Para Athlete to take to the track at the World Para Athletics European Championships in Poland this evening. The defending champion competed in the T13 1500m just a week on from recording a huge Personal Best at the City of Lisburn event.

The European champion produced the perfect tactical performance as she streaked away from the field in the final lap and was able to hold off a late challenge to ensure her place at the top of the podium.

Speaking after the race Greta said ‘We decided that we would run from the front and that it would be great practice for Tokyo and it all worked out.’

She went on to say ‘The two Russian girls had beaten me in the past a good couple of times so I am delighted that this time I was lucky enough to beat them.’
