This evening was the busiest session of the European Championships so far for Ireland with four athletes in three finals. Nicole Turner was the first to medal, claiming bronze in her 200m IM final. Teammate Dearbhaile Brady was not far behind finishing fifth overall in the same event.

Speaking after her final Nicole Turner said, “A medal at this time of year is the icing on the cake. I think the year of the games the Europeans is the final prep, we make mistakes we try new things and work on old things aswell. Technically I felt a lot better than this morning, still the same time but to come out with a bronze medal just makes it a little bit better.”

Barry McClements rounded off the evening with a fantastic swim that saw him also pick up a bronze medal for team Ireland. This brings Ireland’s medal tally to four, with four days of competition left to go.

Speaking after his final McClements said, “Yeah it’s a nice feeling. I was probably a bit of an underdog but like I said this morning I’d go for a PB and I think that was close so I’m very happy.”

Deaten Registe finished fourth in his final, a fantastic achievement for the young swimmer in what was his first appearance on the European stage.

Tomorrow Ni Riain is back in the pool for her third event, the 100m backstroke. Paralympic gold medallist Ellen Keane will make her first appearance of this Championships in the 100m freestyle.
