Two Medals for Ireland at Powerlifting World Championships

Niamh Buckley, Para Powerlifting, left, in the practice mixed zone during the Paralympics Ireland Aspire Programme at the Sport Ireland Institute on the Sport Ireland Campus. Woman with phone recording her and another woman looking on listening.

Niamh Buckley has clinched a brilliant World Championship Gold at the World Para Powerlifting Championships in Cairo, Egypt.

The young Cork star, who won silver in Dubai, improved on that great performance by producing her best ever lift to win Gold with a new European Record of 77kg in the up to 73kg category.

Buckley is part of a two-person Irish team competing at the Junior World championships in Cairo along with Casey Fitzgerald from Cavan who also claimed silverware at the competition.

Fitzgerald won the bronze medal for overall lift with her first lift of 83kg and third lift at 87kg sealing the medal.

However, their stay in Egypt is not yet over as she competes in the Senior version of the event next week. Buckley will compete in the up to 61kg category on Wednesday and Fitzgerald will compete in the up to 73kg category on Monday. They will be joined in the senior team by Michael O’Cearra, Ruari Devlin and Sean Hughes.

Congratulations to Niamh, Casey, their teams, coaches and the Irish Wheelchair Association on this great success.
