It was a busy weekend for Irish para sport with athletes in competition allover the globe chasing invaluable results in the lead up to Paris 2024 which is 92 days away.
Orla Comerford stormed home to victory in the 100m at the Diamond League Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon. The Raheny Shamrocks sprinter finished the race in 12.13. It was a mixed classification race, however the first and second places on the podium were claimed by two T13 sprinters, Comerford and USA’s Kym Crosby.
Lana Sutton hit a new 100m personal best (13.06) at the Stratford Speed Open.
Two Irish para rowers were in Lucerne, Switzerland for the 2024 World Rowing Cup II. It was Tiarnán O Donnell’s was making his international debut and it was Steven McGowan’s first International appearance in the single sculls.
O’Donnell and McGowan placed 4th (09:18.04) and 5th (09:19.82) respectively in their heat, booking both rowers a place in the final.
Tiarnán improved his time from the heat to finish in second place (08:57.09) and doing so claimed his first international medal. McGowan also vastly improved his heat time (09:06.71).
McGowan and O’Donnell are in competition for the male spot in the PR2 Mixed Double sculls boat that will take to the waters in September at the Paralympic Games.
