Weekend of Medals for Irish Para Swimmers and Cyclists


Irish para athletes had great medal success over the weekend with both the swimmers and the cyclists making the podium at their respective events.

Barry McClements and Nicole Turner both medalled in at the Para Swimming World Series in Minneapolis, USA. Turner took silver in the 50m fly in a time of 37.87. She previously She also took home a silver medal  in the 50m butterfly at the Para World Swimming series in Melbourne this February.

McClements was in impressive form in the US collecting two silver medals in the 100m backstroke with a time of 1:06.99 and the 100m fly posting 1:03:17.

The para cycling team were in action at the Maniago Para-cycling World Cup in Italy which saw them bring home two gold medals and one bronze.

The women’s tandem duo of Katie-George Dunlevy and Linda Kelly took the gold medal in the time trial on Saturday. The pair then backed up their gold medal performance in the time trial with a huge win in the road race. They proved too strong for their competitors in the women’s tandem race as they finished one minute and 13 seconds ahead of second place

Ronan Grimes was also on the podium in the men’s C4 time trial finishing in third place and only 15.54 seconds behind gold medal winner, Louis Clincke from Belgium. World Champion Grimes finished in seventh place in the road race which came down to a bunch sprint where he crossed the line seventh in the group of 18.

Richael Timothy picked up a fifth place finish in another encouraging performance, following up her fifth place finish in the time trial. In action on Saturday, Declan Slevin finished 29th in the road race.

Damien Vereker and Mitchell McLaughlin, who made their debut together on Friday in the Time Trial, recorded a 14th place finish in their first road race together.
