This week it’s all about Niamh McCarthy, Niamh is part of our Senior Athletics panel and competes in the F41 discus throw.
Since emerging onto the scene in 2012 through a Talent ID programme, Niamh has had a huge amount of success in her sport.
Winning bronze in her first ever international competition at the World Championships in 2015, she then continued that success into 2016. Firstly, winning silver at the European Championships, she was then selected for Team Ireland for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio. She set a PB and new European record with a throw of 27.05, which put her on the podium with a second-place finish.
Since Rio, Niamh has not rested on her laurels, she went on to win silver at World Championships in 2017 and then finally got gold at Europeans the following year in Berlin.
The Cork native finished 2019 with another World Championship medal after a third-place finish, which secured Team Ireland a vitally important slot at the 2020 Paralympic Games.
Although the Games have been postponed for one year, Niamh hopes to utilize the extra year to ensure she is fully prepared, both physically and mental for Tokyo 2020.
