The Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) are hosting a wheelchair racing coaching workshop at South East Technological University (SETU) Carlow on November 4th.
The workshop will be delivered by Heather Ardis, Para Development Officer with Athletics Northern Ireland along with para-athlete Andrew Greer. The aim of the workshop is to provide and introductory understanding of classification, seating positions, session planning and basic coaching skills.
The workshop is open to coaches who are aiming to work with juniors and beginner adults and athletes who are looking to get involved in wheelchair racing.
The morning session (10am-1pm) is for coaches only and will cover:
- Race chair maintenance
- Seating positioning
- Pushing technique
- Wheelchair warm-up
- Beginner sessions
The afternoon session (2pm – 4pm) will be a practical coaching session for athletes. Beginner athletes are invited to attend where they will receive coaching instruction from the coaches in attendance.
Please note that athletes interested in attending the afternoon session must be a minimum age of 8 years old.
